At exactly 14:46 Eastern Standard Time, the biometric telemetry system at the Strategic Innovation Directorate flagged an anomaly. Dan—clearance level 7—had disappeared from inside Sublevel AD-1 without triggering any of the 96 physical or digital exit protocols. No sign-in. No sign-out. No breach. Just absence.
Dr. Kira Malloy, Dan’s supervisor and project controller, stared at the frozen timestamp on the internal tracking dashboard. Dan’s presence log terminated mid-keystroke. Not corrupted. Not erased. Just… halted.
She tapped a secure line into the Directorate’s legacy comms matrix and keyed in the emergency contact listed in Dan’s red file. A curious name surfaced—Dr. Emmett Jones, MIT.
The call connected with a faint delay—then a voice, dry and familiar.
“This is Jones.”
“Dr. Jones, this is Dr. Kira Malloy, SID. Your former student, Daniel Dwight Mann, is missing. You’re his emergency contact.”
Jones paused. “That’s… unexpected. Dan and I haven’t spoken in years.”
“Nevertheless, you’re listed.”
“I advised him at MIT—once. On a speculative cognition model he later refused to publish.”
Malloy frowned. “Have you heard from him?”
“No. Did something occur?”
A sharp chime interrupted the call. Malloy’s terminal flashed.
She blinked. A security cam feed opened—The feed glitched. She paused.
“Dr. Jones… I have to let you go.”
