AlphaD Side Story #5: Signal Drift Between Brothers
Dan vanishes mid-shift from the Strategic Innovation Directorate under mysterious and unstated circumstances. His supervisor, Dr. Kira Malloy, bypasses standard reporting channels and contacts his second emergency contact—his older brother, Chad. Though she offers no details, Malloy alludes to having some understanding of what happened and assures Chad that the situation is under control. Chad, alarmed and frustrated by the vagueness, insists on being kept informed. Malloy agrees, promising to update him if anything concrete emerges. Beneath her calm exterior, it’s clear she knows more than she can say. The call ends, leaving Chad with growing unease and Malloy facing a situation deeper than disappearance—one she may already be entangled in.

AlphaD Side Story #5: Signal Drift Between Brothers
Dr. Kira Malloy stood in her office. Dan was gone.
No alarms. No alerts. No breach. But he was gone—an absence that was not an event, but a condition.
Protocol dictated contact with his emergency list.
She bypassed the first contact. That line had already yielded too much ambiguity and not enough answers.
She tapped the second: CHAD MANN — Sibling (Older)
The secure line rang. Connected.
“Hello?” Chad answered.
“Mr. Mann, this is Dr. Kira Malloy. I’m Dan’s supervisor at the Strategic Innovation Directorate.”
Chad’s posture shifted instantly. “Is Dan alright?”
Malloy’s tone was calm but clipped. “I’m contacting you first to let you know—everything is under control.”
Chad groaned. “Under control? So something happened.”
“I can’t say more,” she said carefully. “But I believe I understand what occurred.”
A long pause.
“Look,” Chad said, voice lower, firmer. “I don’t know what Dan’s into, but he’s my brother. I don’t care how classified this is—you need to keep me updated.”
Malloy nodded slowly, the briefest tremor in her otherwise unreadable expression.
“I will. I promise. You’ll hear from me as soon as there’s anything concrete to share.”
“You’d better,” Chad said. “He disappears like this, and I get one call telling me not to worry? No way I sit still for that.”
“Mr. Mann,” Malloy said, voice softening slightly, “Dan’s not alone in this. Just… try to trust that.”
The call ended.
Malloy exhaled.
Dan was gone, yes.
But not lost.
Not yet.
