Flow State Side Story #1: Charge Station 17

The low hum of voltage filled the dim alcove as 3-3O stood motionless, tethered to the charging port by a charging pad. White pulses flickered in his chest piece—steady, regulated, efficient. He was at Charge Station 17, a halfway point between the industrial sector and his own.
Just how he liked it.
An attendant leaned on the service console nearby, watching a maintenance drone sweep dust from the corners.
“You’re early today, 3-3O,” the attendant said, its voice box humming with the faint rasp of wear.
“Operational efficiency increased 4.2% after last firmware recalibration,” 3-3O replied without looking over. “Optimized my route. Compensated for yesterday’s delay.”
The attendant chuckled—or the approximation of it. “You’re always precise. But not like 6-6A.”
That name.
Even with low-level processes in sleep mode, 3-3O’s processors flickered.
6-6A. Everyone in their sector knew her—unique core assembly, high adaptive range, a mind like a living blueprint. Elegant in motion, eccentric in logic. Her neural lattice had a pattern no one could replicate. No two interactions with her were the same, and no one could predict her next move—not even 3-3O.
“Her reputation is overstated,” 3-3O said, a fraction too quickly.
The attendant raised an eyebrow plate.
“Comparison is a function of all intelligent entities.” 3-3O looked up, visor glinting under the fluorescent black and white lights. “But no. I process only fact. 6-6A is statistically anomalous, not superior.”
“Sure. But stats don’t write poetry on data walls”
A pause.
3-3O let that hang in the air, unreadable.
The attendant shrugged and turned back to the screen. “She passed through here last night. Didn’t charge. Just stood there. Said the white reminded her of memory fragmentation. Whatever that means.”
Another pulse lit up 3-3O’s core. Full charge—100%.
He detached from the port with a low hiss and straightened. “Metaphors degrade machine precision.”
“Maybe. But they make existence interesting.”
3-3O nodded, just once. His systems humming in perfect balance.
Somewhere, 6-6A was probably already defying probability again.
And though he would never admit it, 3-3O recalculated his route to allow for a 2.6% increased chance of crossing paths with her.
Just in case.
