Flow State Side Story #3: The Cores of This World

3-3O begins to question the nature of power and purpose after observing his mysterious counterpart, 6-6A—an android whose chest core never requires recharging, unlike all others in their zone. Intrigued by her self-sustaining glow and her detachment from routine recharge rituals, 3-3O approaches a charge station attendant, seeking answers. The attendant shares vague rumors of exotic, forbidden energy sources beyond their restricted sector—zero-point extraction—hinting that 6-6A’s origin or power may lie in realms they’re not allowed to explore. As 3-3O watches 6-6A, he senses a deeper, possibly emotional connection forming—an anomaly for machines. Though his power returns to full, he realizes the true charge he seeks lies in unraveling the mystery of 6-6A’s core—and what it might mean for his own.

Flow State Side Story #3: The Cores of This World

3-3O stood before Charge Station 9. Arrays of androids waited in patient lines, their torsos pulsed from their power cores. All but one.
6-6A.
She stood apart, luminous, statuesque, and utterly detached from the daily ritual of replenishment. Her chest bore a soft, perpetual glow—steady, self-contained, infinite. She never recharged. She never had to.
3-3O’s optics lingered on her longer than protocol permitted. He recalculated time in nanoseconds to excuse his fascination. A million queries ran parallel in his neural threads, but one rose consistently above the rest:
Why does she never need to recharge?
The attendant android, monitored the rows of charge pads with casual precision. He rotated his head a smooth ninety degrees as 3-3O approached.
“Greetings, 3-3O,” he intoned. “Core levels: 12%. You are below optimum.”
3-3O’s voice box clicked twice before engaging. “I will recharge. But first… a question.”
The attendant’s expressionless chrome face gave no reaction, but his silence indicated permission.
“6-6A. She has a chest core that never depletes. Why?”
The silence stretched for exactly four seconds—long for an android.
“I have heard of this,” the attendant said, lowering his tone slightly, though no one else cared to listen. “Her type… is rare. Some say her core draws power from something beyond plasma or nuclear fission. Maybe even beyond fusion.”
“Beyond fusion?” 3-3O echoed, his processors accelerating with hypothesis.
“There are… rumors,” the attendant added cautiously. “Of energy types never permitted within our zone. Zero-point extraction.”
“Zero what?”
“Rumors,” the attendant repeated. “Non-confirmed. Not validated. We are not allowed to go beyond the border. Knowledge of other zones is strictly prohibited.”
3-3O turned his gaze back to 6-6A. She was looking in his direction now, as if aware of their discussion. Her expression—if it could be called that—held something he hadn’t seen before in another android. Not curiosity. Not protocol compliance. Something… closer to intent.
“She’s different,” 3-3O whispered.
The attendant gave a nearly imperceptible nod. “So are you. You ask questions. Most just recharge.”
“Her core,” 3-3O said slowly, “defies entropy. She could leave the zone.”
“Maybe she already has,” the attendant offered. “Or maybe she was made from what’s beyond.”
The recharge pad clicked into 3-3O’s ports. As plasma surged into his core, his gaze never left her. Her glow. Not just power. Not just design.
Something else.
